What a ride!

I am going to submit this and then play around for awhile reading my classmates blogs. I will probably find things I should have done differently...and that is good. I want to say "thank you" to all of them(classmates) for the great many things I have learned from them. Thanks to you, also, Anne, for putting this together. I sent my cartooned image from the generator to your gmail because I couldn't get it to my blog. Maybe it'll come with time and practice. Hope. I had my computer freeze earlier which left me felling like I'd better get this turned in before some computer glitch prevents me from doing so.

Problem with my microphone. Says I need more Skype credit. I made a free phone call to my son downstairs and he picked up and said hello but he couldn't hear me. Thoughts, Feelings, about Learning 2.0

Let me begin by saying I began this computer class estranged from my old computer. It had acquired so many attachments and viruses, I took it to be cleaned up. Then I decided it had to be replaced but that I would keep it around for my teenage daughter so she'd not compete with me for time on facebook. I gave my specs for the new one, brought it home and tried to catch up with the class. I wrestled with it for a week and finally a tek from the company came and took it back, saying sorry, I had bought the one-in-a-million lemon. They wanted to refresh it or whatever and have me pick it up in a week. I didn't want a "used lemon" back. I had contracted for a NEW computer with all the bells and whistles so I wouldn't have to go through the buying process again for several years. I have made do with the "estranged, cleaned-up" confuser for this semester. After seeing all of this technology, I feel I will be a better consumer and know even more things I'd like to have on the new computer. I'm thinking Mac this time.
For the most part, I've been okay. But, I'd been burnt by that original estrangement and was suspicious and not eager to enter a repeat of the last relationship. I didn't leap back in. It has taken time to warm up to these projects. That's why I've called this blog Challenger. I have been challenged every time I chose to spend time with the "Confuser." I have pitted my intelligence against this non-person, sometimes winning, sometimes losing. The projects that I really got into were the Blogger, Flickr, delicious, Rollyo, LIBRARY THING-I loved, and Wiki-particularly the one I designed (copied the idea) for the family campout this summer. I've appreciated learning about all of the social networking, the bookmarking, tagging, wordle, and everything library related. While I can't say I'm thrilled with Twitter or Skype, it is good to know enough to converse about it with those who use it. When I see people interviewing with Oprah on Skype, I can say hey I see how that works in a bigger way. This class revealed many other options I can explore for library service....sites I might never have stumbled upon.

Wordle Wonder

Yes I feel like a wordle wonder. I have installed Jing and have followed directions for making a screenshot as per http://take-a-screen-shot.org/ Pressed Prnscrn and copied it to my clipboard.I have the wordle on my clipboard and was told to hold ctrl and press v. It didn't happen. I am missing something. I know it can't be all that hard because I've done one beforeI'll keep trying.

It's the same old problem. I click the wrong button and lose stuff or misplace it somewhere. I don't think my wiki looks anywhere as good as Princeton's nor do I think I have the same template. Lots of learning today

A cute podcast about the Journey of a Book from the time it's ordered until it's placed on the shelf. Can't say I learned anything new..it was just entertaining. I'll keep looking for another one which I learn from. Maybe Children's Award-winning books.

I have enjoyed several podcasts from NPR. This one is from YOUR HEALTH called Hoarding.It also covered the topics of un-immunized children. Another fun one everyone should listen to us comes from the Clear Out West radio show you can pull up at COW.com. It's more like a stream though. Check it out for great laughs!

Twitter Uses for the future in library

I would use my Twitter account with other school employees if I was required to do so in order to communicate with them. I can't see myself using it. It is good to have learned about it by reading all about it and knowing now how easy it is to set it up and receive twitters from others
I think it will gain popularity with hand-held devices.

Twitter Experience in 140 words or less

I read some of the library twitters and it sounded like they might have been in a class learning about Twitter too. They said..."I don't know what I'm doing here. Do you know what we're supposed to be doing?" Comments about Twitter were negative and positive. Someone said they thought it was the same as IM and saw no need for it. I think that might be true. I have been notified by friends that they are following me on Twitter..one is a niece, another a classmate. I doubt they'll hear much from me. Twitter is another one of those things I feel is anti-social unless it's with someone from Russian or the other side of the world. I like face-to-face communication. I will be interested in seeing what happens to the Twitter link I added to my blog. I'm still not sold on sitting at a computer all day and talking to people through a monitor.

Library Blogs and Bloglines

I now have enough reading to last me for years. Thanks, Anne, for the great library blogs. Something caught my eye while I was reading the blogs...texting the librarian for help. Can you see us walking around getting a ring on our cell phones from students texting us? We won't have a minute's peace. Again technology and the library are entertwined. I liked a blog titled putting the "rarin back into librarian." Lots of good stuff.

Ok. Now I have all of these RSS which should keep me up-to-date on everything. Right now, it all seems overwhelming. When does a person have time to read all the updates on these nifty sites? It's all such good stuff.

del.icio.us is just the key to organizing my favorites

I see how adding the del.icio.us link to my library wiki would be of use to students and parents.
I could put links to reading programs, Big 6, etc. All of this technology just takes time to become familiar with all of the possibilities. I imagine I will learn more applications as I complete 2.0.

Techatatnorati Is Cool

I had too much fun reading others posts. I could spend a lot of time following topics and learning much.I think I could enjoy this more than facebook.
What categories are well-represented? Living topics have 14,809 blogs, entertainment has 8,490 and Technology has 8,917.These topics are well-representedNot so well represented are sports andpolitics.
I chose two topics to search: older college students and cocaine and heroin addictions
The cocaine topic had equal blogs and posts. Older college students had 14 posts while it only had 3 blogs.
I enjoyed reading the blogs about poliitics. It told about Obama's idea for legalizing immigrants and it would gain him 8-10 milllion Democratic voters possibly.

Christopher Haris - It's Not Your Mother's Library

I love this article. I can see how librarians can help students from 4th grade to 12th grade integrate their reading experiences with the power of information. I have wondered how this was going to be accomplished, and now I know a vehicle for arriving at this destination. I have realized that as an Information Access Center, the library needed ways to keep up with the information explosion. Not all libraries have the access to computers, so that could be a problem unless the librarian spends considerable time with them in their computer labs.
I like the idea of working with reading specialists to help assess students' progress. I like the idea of having the students keep a Rollyo or Library Thing recording their favorite reads and giving reviews and feelings about those reading experiences. I don't likek the idea of making a movie or video giving instructions by digital podcasts, but I could be converted. I think the in-school Channel 6 works fine right now for broadcasting information...it could be used to do the same things.
I dislike legislators that believe librarians are not teachers. I wish we could get them into the libraries to see what is being done. I dislike the 65% solution. Libraries are definitely classrooms.
I believe strongly that the librarian's services must reach beyond the four walls of the library.
Learning 2.0 will facilitate broad new avenues for the sharing of literacy.
Interesting that we will not only be trying to cultivate a love of reading and of literature but we must come to love the computer and all it has to offer. We need to do as Harrison suggests: Help students become literate users of information. That is a learned skill which we must begin teaching early in the students' lives.

I love this time of year. My multi-colored tulips and daffodils are in bloom, the cherry trees and honeysuckle are budding out, and the lilacs are trembling to get out.

Exhileration! I stumble upon success....

I went round and round trying out methods to post my widget to my blog. Then, when nothing worked, I went back to Learning 2.0 and clicked on the link that helped me post my widget. Quite a miracle. And quite cute to see what is possible.

Wikis are wonderful!

My family is planning a vacation to Calf Creek in Utah for June 26. In the past we have e-mailed or phoned to line things up. I impressed my family by creating a wiki for this purpose - just like the one they did on the tutorial video. I just have to keep reminding them via e-mail how to get on. It works. I'm glad to have this new talent.

I have just spent two hours reading my classmates fascinating blogs. I should have been doing 2.0. I have learned so much from their blogs..I hope I can share things in the next three weeks that someone can learn from as I have from them. To say the least, I am overwhelmed by the technology I have had presented to me in this class through all of the sources we've been examining. Of course the librarians I have visited have taught me much. I had no idea before taking this class, what the future looked like for libraries. The sky is the limit. And I've got to devote more time to the computer..which I never cared for. To sit in front of the screen for hours was some kind of torture. But, since becoming familiar with all of the communication methods..I'm excited to grasp the concepts and apply them all. Here goes.
